Happy Lent

I gave up soda/pop/awesome juice for lent.

There. It’s out there. Now it’s real.

It’s been about 36 hours and the extreme fatigue has subsided. I’m guessing that’s because I slept for about 10 hours last night. Either that, or my body has gone into shock.

Here’s the thing, I like to think that I don’t drink THAT much soda. Like one, maybe two a day. But one, maybe two a day adds up to like one, maybe two million calories per year.

So, I decided to go without this Lenten season. Plus, like I always say, Jesus DIED for me, the least I can do is give up Coke for a few weeks.

I’ve been struggling with this though. For those of you who don’t drink soda, all I can say to describe how much I like it is: Take the most awesome thing in your life, add in the necessity equivalent of brushing your teeth and then make it cost $1. That’s what soda is to me.

Perfect.

Except, you know, only God is perfect. So ya. I’m giving it for Him. He is supposed to be more important to me than anything. Even Wild Cherry Pepsi from Taco Bell.

Plus, if I make it Easter is going to be that much more rockin’. A 24-case of Coke for everyone! Pop! Pop! Hurray!!

  1. What will you be replacing your soda with during this time? I don’t celebrate lent myself, and I know different denominations have slightly different variations on the rules and purpose of lent. But I was under the impression that the point of lent was not just to give up something you enjoy, but to replace
that discipline you gave up with a more holy discipline. Will you be drinking water instead, or putting the time or money you would have devoted to the soda towards an important cause or charity? Perhaps a charity related to hunger, or a local food bank?
    What do you think?

  2. is beer still ok? i do not really drink soda, like maybe i have had three sodas in the last five years. BUT that changed recently when i discovered this stuff called Malta. Specifically Malt Star (imported from Israel). This stuff is like beer soda! it’s unfermented beer (no alcohol) with some sugar added for sweetness. the stuff is amazing! does this count as soda?
