should they change their name to old kids?

nkotb. they still have the right stuff.
nkotb. they still have the right stuff.

so back in the day (we’ll go with 1993) I was IN LOVE with the new kids on the block. and I asked EVERYONE for new kids on the block stuff for my birthday, and i had visions of a new kids on the block-themed room complete with pillow cases and a new kids on the block backpack.

except the only person who got me anything was my aunt jean, and it was a cassette tape of four of their songs. and holy crap, did I ever listen to that thing. my mom said nobody else got me stuff because they all thought everyone else would give me new kids on the block stuff. which seemed like a pretty lame reason in my book, seeing as how it is IMPOSSIBLE to have too much new kids on the block stuff.

anyway, I eventually moved on to more important things (like saved by the bell), but the boys always held a piece of my tween heart.

but then. oh snap. the NKOTB (look how cool i am, using their acronym) decided to make a COMEBACK!!!!!!

holy jebus.

are you asking me if I got tickets to go see them? because OF COURSE I DID!

$60 later, I was on my way to their Saturday night concert at the Allstate Arena.

I went with my best friend April and her sister Jackie and a group of other NKOTB fans in their late 20s and early 30s.

let me tell you people, I am NOT the only person left who still LOVES these guys.

a sold-out stadium full of 22- to 32-year-old women in Chicagoland apparently feel the same way. and they had the side pony tails, leggings, and original NKOTB jackets to prove it. (myself? i donned a couple NKOTB buttons on my jacket, old-school style).

People, this stadium full of women (and four gay guys) was filled with screams for the ENTIRE 2-hour show.

every.single.second. the women screamed SO much that my ears ached afterward.

:: sigh ::

ok. you got me. I screamed too.

don’t judge.

it was just SO exciting.

and they kept all their old choreography.

and for some reason none of their voices have changed.

first, let me say that their new stuff is pretty awesome.

but everyone knows we were there for the oldies. “Step by Step” anyone? How about “Hang Hangin Tough?” you know you want to wave your hands in the air right now, don’t even bother fighting it.

and it was SO awesome. and April said it was the best concert experience of her life. and im going to have to go ahead and agree with here there.

because NKOTB still rocks my socks.

note: this post might make you gag (but i don’t care)

so this guy i like, well, we e-mail and stuff a lot. and at the end of our e-mails we write a sentence that starts with “miss you like” as in “miss you like newspapers miss the classified ads they got before the Internet came along” or “miss you like candles miss the night”

and then, one time I e-mailed this boy a picture of myself and he wrote back:

“miss you like my heart just missed a beat.”

and then i married him.

yep. i seriously married him right then and there.

ok.

i didn’t marry him.

but i would if he asked, because that is THE best line a guy has ever said to me.

and the best part is, im pretty sure he meant it.

random thoughts vol. 3 (or is it 4?)

  • yes, I’ve had a few accidents, but seriously progressive. you want me to pay $230 a MONTH for car insurance? you people are insane. im going to go ahead and call that little gekco to see if i really can save 15 percent or more.
  • i always complain about going to weddings (see: i make no money, therefore i have no money to travel), but then i go and they are THE FUNNEST THING EVA! i had such a good time this weekend. and i also made a new friend. who is awesome (even though he likes cats).
  • what is UP with the chicago bears? are we EVER going to get a good quarterback? this is how i visualize draft debates in the locker room: “maybe we should draft good quarterback x.” “no, he’s too good. we need to draft bad quarterback z and focus on our defense. if we had a good quarterback, people would have to stop calling us the chicago bears.” “oh. ya. you’re right. let’s just get an average quarterback and work on our safety plays.” this season is not going to be for the faint of heart. and if one more person tells me “well, they COULD be 3-0,” im going to cry.
  • i finally figured out how to put music on my phone. that means i have finally left 1987 and moved past cassette tapes onto digital music files. what can i say? im just cool like that.
  • yesterday my mom’s dog jumped up and grabbed my contact case (complete with contacts) and put the whole thing in his mouth, and then i stuck my whole hand in there and grabbed it, and then i rinsed everything off with contact solution and stuck them in my eyes because they were a brand new pair of 30-day contacts and im poor. thoughts?
  • coming up with a daily photo is harder than i thought it would be, and im thinking of making it a 5-day a week photo.
  • i cannot give up soda people. i know it’s bad for me, but i love it. and i love caffeine. and it’s SO delicious. and i have no motivation to give it up. so i just bought a 12-pack of coke. stop judging me.
