Does this mean my new Bears coat is bad luck?

I have come to the conclusion that the Giants are meanies.

Man, that was hard to watch.

Seriously, what happens when a third-string quarter back gets hurt? Does Gould go in? Because if Gould goes in, I’d think he’d be pretty reliable in the position. I’m just sayin.

My heart goes out to Jay Cutler though. The guy doesn’t suck. He doesn’t. His offensive line just secretly hates his guts so they move out of the way anytime someone from the opposing team even looks in their direction. Or maybe they’re just scared of the other guys. Or maybe they’re just figments of our imagination, and Lovie doesn’t even actually have anyone playing those positions.

Whatever the case, I feel bad for Cutler. I didn’t see the first half of last night’s Bears’ game because I was doing church stuff, but I did listen to the second quarter on Bears Radio 780, so I heard seven of the AND CUTLER GETS SACKED AGAIN!!!s.

Makes me cringe just thinking about it.

And then, because it’s apparently a record or some crap, I got to watch the replays of all 9 sacks on Cutler over, and over, and over as commentators talked smack about my beloved Bears.

Rough night man.

On a better note, let me get a HOLLA!!! for our defense. Those guys rock. They’re all, “Oh, you think you’re going to get a touch down because you’re one yard from the goal? Ha! No. Let me just pop that ball right out of your arm.”

Good times.

But then, of course our stupid offense couldn’t even get out of the end zone so the defense had to come right back on the field. And I know they had to be tired. I would be if I played like 55 minutes of a 60 minute game because my offense thought first downs were bad luck.

Don’t misunderstand, I’m still going to go around being happy that the Bears are 3-1. That’s still good. What? It is? And maybe Sunday’s game will force the Bears to look-up “running game” this week on Wikipedia or something, and they’ll come back with some better plays.

I still have hope for this team and I still believe with all my heart that they will make the play-offs this year.

Now excuse me while I say a prayer for Cutler’s quick recovery and a new offensive line.

Thoughts on Christian music

My theory on Christian music always goes back to a post I read once by Penelope Trunk about how if you love something you really want to write about it, but you can’t ever write about it in an interesting way until you hate it too. The problem is, no self-respecting Christian is ever going to go there with God.

It’s dark and awful, and admitting that maybe that one time that you were crying on the tile floor in your bathroom until our eyes burst from exhaustion and you wondered how that, THAT, could ever happen to you, that in that moment you might have maybe, kinda hated God for half of a half second, well, that’s kind of frowned upon in most churches.

Don’t get me wrong, doubt is fine. Doubt is something to overcome, to work through, to resolve. But hating God? How dare thy say such things.

And so, everyone tries to write happy, happy, joy, joy songs about God, and how we need to love Him, and how He is awesome and we need to love Him.

And ya, those things are all true and great and wonderful, but when you’re driving in Route 59 traffic, sometimes worship songs just don’t do it. Which is a weird thing for me to say, because lately, while I try to avoid rear-ending people, all I listen to is Christian Radio. It keeps me calm. It helps me spend time with God. And I need the peace it brings me.

But, well, a lot of the songs aren’t very good. They just aren’t raw enough. They don’t hit a nerve. They don’t have whatever IT is.

There is one song I love though.

One song I rock out to like the world really is ending this time, and I have just three more minutes to suck in everything earthly.

It’s Matt Maher’s “Hold us together.”

I listen to it over. And over. And over. And over. And it always stays beautifully wonderful.

I love that it starts out with a beat that could sway a stadium of people or two people on a couch. I love the message it tells about love. And I especially love the line “I’ll be my brother’s keeper, so the whole world will know that we’re not alone.”

That right there sums up this whole Christian thing in one sweet, perfect sentence.

Enjoy:

Crap

I said crap in church today.

And not just one of those under my breath “Crap, where’s my nametag?” craps. Or like a “Crap. What IS that woman’s name?” crap.

No.

I said it into the microphone, because that’s how I roll.

I do the prayer in front of the whole church all youth-director style these days during first service, and before the prayer, sometimes I like to talk about God and whatnot.

And recently a friend of mine told me that the root of the word worship is dig, and that when we sing the opening songs (aka, WORSHIP) it’s a time to dig up all the crap in our lives and let it go so we can focus on God.

It’s something that stuck with me, so I decided to share.

All, “So, ya, it’s a time to dig up all the crap up our lives and let it go…”

I didn’t even think twice about it.

Or even one and a half about it.

But then, after service, I guess it got around that CRYSTAL SAID CRAP IN CHRUCH.

For shame.

I’m told “baggage” might have been a better choice or words.

I don’t know about you, but the crap in my life doesn’t look anything like luggage though. So ya.

It’s probably youth leader 101 or something though. “Find a way to say crap in chruch while talking about how awesome God is.”

A+ for me if it is.
